All of the products in Kenshi that fill your hunger bar are considered food. Every nutrient charge used fills a character’s hunger bar by one. Unless the only forms of food they have are edible components, they will automatically consume some food when their hunger falls below 250. If that’s the case, they won’t consume it until they’re below 200 calories.
If you are confused about why your character doesn’t eat the food, check out our Kenshi How to Eat Short Guide below.
Kenshi How to Eat Short Guide
Your character in Kenshi eats automatically. All you need is food in your inventory or nearby on the ground. Food may be purchased from dealers in cities or trade caravans on the go.
When your character reaches a specific level of hunger, they will eat automatically. If a food type is found in a squad member’s or a pack animal’s bag, any member of the squad can consume it immediately if they are close enough.
Multiple things impact your character’s hunger rate in Kenshi. As you can see, some of the effects are visible in the prior photograph. Your character will become hungry faster if they are carrying too much weight for their strength level.
Hunger has a multiplier based on your character’s race; for example, Sheks need to eat more frequently than humans, who have a base hunger level of 1x. The Hiver race will require even less food because their hunger rate is 0.5x that of humans, meaning they will become hungry half as quickly. On the other side, skeletons will never have to eat.

The yellow highlighting denotes a character’s slight hunger, as seen in the image above. This can vary from yellow to red, with yellow indicating the least severe malnutrition.
